No. Keratin and Brazilian blowouts are smoothing treatments, not straighteners. They eliminate frizz, reduce bulk, and soften your curl pattern, but you will still have texture when your hair air-dries.

 

What is the difference between Keratin and a Relaxer/Japanese Straightener? 

Relaxers and Japanese straighteners permanently break the internal bonds of your hair to force it straight, which can cause severe damage. Keratin simply coats and seals the outer cuticle to smooth the hair temporarily without internal damage.

 

Why do you have a strict no-refund policy regarding curly hair?

We highly recommend getting your color done before your keratin treatment (even on the same day). If you color after, you must wait at least 2 weeks, as the color developer can strip the fresh keratin from your hair.

 

What is the aftercare for the first 48 hours? 

Depending on the specific treatment we use, you may need to avoid washing your hair, sweating heavily, or using hair ties/clips for 48 to 72 hours to ensure the treatment sets perfectly. Your stylist will give you exact instructions.

 

Why must I use a sulfate-free shampoo after my treatment? 

Sulfates are harsh detergents that will rapidly strip the keratin coating right off your hair. Using a sulfate-free shampoo is absolutely mandatory to ensure your treatment lasts the full 3 to 5 months.

 

What Aveda products do you recommend for maintenance? 

The Aveda Smooth Infusion line is your best friend! The anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner are sulfate-free and utilize plant polymers to prolong your smooth results and block humidity.

 

Can I use drugstore sulfate-free shampoos? 

We strongly advise against it. Many drugstore brands claim to be sulfate-free but replace them with heavy salts (sodium chloride) or cheap silicones that will still degrade your keratin treatment and cause buildup.

Most guests come in every 3 to 5 months as the treatment naturally fades out of the hair. Because it doesn't permanently alter the hair, you won't have a harsh line of demarcation as it grows.

 

Can I swim in the pool or ocean after a keratin treatment? 

Chlorine and saltwater will strip the treatment quickly. If you must swim, wet your hair with clean water first and coat it generously with Aveda Botanical Repair leave-in conditioner to create a protective barrier.

 

Does the treatment process smell or smoke? 

When we flat-iron the treatment into the hair, there can be some vapor and a distinct scent. Our salon is well-ventilated, but let us know if you are highly sensitive to smells so we can accommodate you.

Absolutely! Your hair will actually hold thermal styles beautifully, and you'll find that curling or blowing out your hair takes a fraction of the time it used to.

Will a keratin treatment fix my split ends? 

It will temporarily seal the cuticle and make split ends look much smoother, but it does not permanently repair them. A fresh haircut is always the best cure for split ends!

 

How long does the salon appointment take?

Depending on your hair length and density, expect to be in the salon for 2 to 4 hours. The process involves washing, applying the product, blow-drying it into the hair, and meticulously flat-ironing tiny sections.

 

Do I need a consultation first? 

If you have extremely damaged hair or are unsure which of the 4 strengths is right for you, a consultation is highly recommended so we can assess your hair's elasticity and book the proper amount of time.
