How do I know which perm is right for me?

During your consultation, your stylist will assess your hair's history, porosity, and your desired curl pattern. Generally, we use Curl Cult for softer waves and colored hair, and ISO for tight curls and resistant hair.

Why is Olaplex included in every perm?

Perming breaks the disulfide bonds in your hair to create a new shape. Olaplex physically cross-links and rebuilds those bonds while the perm is processing, preventing breakage and maintaining your hair's structural integrity.

What is the "48-Hour Rule"?

It is crucial that you do not wash, wet, or tie your hair up in a tight ponytail or clip for at least 48 hours (2 days) after your perm. The hair is still neutralizing and setting into its new shape; disrupting it can ruin the curl.

How should I prep my hair before a perm appointment?

Arrive with clean, dry hair. Avoid using heavy oils or deep conditioning masks for a few days prior, as these can create a barrier that prevents the perm lotion from penetrating evenly.

Can I get a perm if my hair is colored or highlighted?

If you have single-process color, our gentle Curl Cult perm is usually safe! However, if your hair is heavily highlighted or bleached, perming is generally not recommended. We will perform a strand test to be sure.

Will I need a haircut after my perm?

Yes. The perming process changes the way your hair falls and can sometimes leave the very tips feeling dry. A fresh haircut is required, especially with our ISO perm, to shape your new curls and remove any weight pulling them down.

What Aveda products should I use to maintain my new curls?

We highly recommend Aveda's Be Curly Advanced line. The shampoo, conditioner, and curl enhancer are specifically formulated to fight frizz, define your new texture, and add beautiful shine.

My hair feels dry after perming; what should I do?

Permed hair craves moisture! Incorporating the Aveda Nutriplenish Deep Moisture mask into your weekly routine will flood your new curls with superfood hydration, keeping them bouncy and soft.

How do I keep my hair strong weeks after the perm?

Use the Aveda Botanical Repair strengthening leave-in treatment. It continues to build bonds at the core of your hair, protecting your curls from daily wear and tear.

Can I choose my exact curl pattern?

Yes! The size of the curl is determined by the size of the perm rod we use. We can use large rods for loose, beachy waves, or small rods for tight, defined ringlets.

How long does a Curl Cult perm last?

Curl Cult is demi-permanent. It will look its tightest for the first few weeks and then progressively soften into a looser wave over 4 to 6 months, leaving no harsh line of demarcation.

How long does an ISO perm last?

The ISO perm permanently alters the hair structure. The curls will remain in the permed hair until you cut it off, though the roots will grow in straight.

Is the Curl Cult perm really vegan?

Yes! Curl Cult is a cruelty-free, vegan formula that utilizes pea protein instead of harsh chemicals to gently reshape the hair.

How do I style my short hair perm?

For a crown-only or short perm, simply apply a little Aveda Be Curly Advanced Curl Enhancer to damp hair, scrunch, and either let it air dry or use a diffuser on low heat.

Can I blow-dry my permed hair straight?

We recommend waiting at least a week before applying tension and high heat to your new perm. After that, you can blow it out straight, but doing so frequently may cause the curls to lose their bounce faster.

How often should I wash my permed hair?

Curly hair naturally needs less washing. Aim for 1 to 2 times a week using a sulfate-free, hydrating shampoo like Aveda Nutriplenish to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils.

Can I go swimming after getting a perm?

Wait at least a week before swimming. When you do, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner before getting in the pool to protect your curls from chlorine or salt water.

Why does my perm look tighter when wet?

This is completely normal! Water causes the hair to shrink up into its permed shape. As it dries, the weight of the hair will naturally elongate the curls slightly.

What happens if I don't use professional products at home?

Drugstore products often contain harsh sulfates that strip moisture or heavy silicones that weigh curls down. Using Aveda ensures your perm stays hydrated, strong, and frizz-free.

Is a consultation required for a perm?

Yes, especially if you are a new client or have previously chemically treated hair. A quick consultation allows us to assess your hair's health, discuss your goals, and ensure we book the correct amount of time.
